Steps to calories calculator

Steps to calories calculator: calories burned walking, by steps

Enter your steps, weight and height to see the calories burned walking, the distance and the time it took. The calculator separates the calories the walk added from the ones your body burns at rest anyway.

Convert your steps

Your step length is estimated from height unless you enter your own.

Same unit as height. Measure 10 steps and divide by 10.

Calculated with the ACSM walking equation. On level ground, walking calories depend mostly on body weight and distance.

How it is calculated

Steps × step length gives the distance. The American College of Sports Medicine’s walking equation gives the oxygen used walking on level ground: 3.5 ml per kg per minute at rest plus 0.1 ml per kg for every metre per minute of speed. Each litre of oxygen releases about 5 kcal.

The equation is meant for walking at about 3–6 km/h (1.9–3.7 mph), and it is a simplification: equations based on cadence were 23–35% more accurate for level walking in one study. For comparison, the 2024 Compendium of Physical Activities rates walking at 2.8–3.4 mph (4.5–5.5 km/h) at 3.8 METs and at 3.5–3.9 mph at 4.8 METs, where 1 MET is the energy you use sitting at rest. A cadence of about 100 steps a minute marks moderate-intensity walking for most adults.

The 3.5 is what your body uses at rest, so the calculator shows two numbers. Walking only leaves resting energy out and is the one to compare with food. Including resting is closer to what fitness trackers show. On flat ground the walking-only number depends almost entirely on weight and distance, so a slower walk takes longer but burns about the same.

Step length

Without your own measurement, step length is estimated as about 41% of height (0.413 for women and 0.415 for men). That is a rule of thumb used in step-counting software, not the result of a physiological study, and it is often far enough off to matter. One stride is two steps, so don’t mix them up. Measuring your own is easy: walk 10 normal steps, measure the distance and divide by 10. Hills, stairs, a heavy bag and pace all change the result.

Why your watch shows a different number

Watches combine steps, heart rate and your profile, and studies comparing them with laboratory measurements found energy-expenditure errors much larger than their heart-rate errors; see are fitness tracker calories accurate? Treat any calorie number, including this one, as an estimate. How many steps are worth aiming for is a separate question, answered in how many steps a day: what the research says.

Steps in Bodyvault

Bodyvault reads steps from Apple Health or Health Connect against a daily goal you set (8,000 to start). It can nudge you to move after an hour of sitting, and suggest a short walk after you log a meal. What studies found about walks after meals is in walking after eating.

Questions

How many calories do 10,000 steps burn?

For a 70 kg person walking briskly with a typical step length, about 247 kcal from the walking itself, or about 351 kcal including resting energy. Heavier people burn more.

How far is 10,000 steps?

About 7.06 km (4.38 miles) for a step length of 71 cm. Taller people cover more distance.

Does walking faster burn more calories?

Per minute, yes. For the same distance on level ground, only a little: the main differences are weight, distance and hills.

Is my data saved?

No. The calculation runs in the page and nothing is sent anywhere.
